Wśród projektów finansowanych w ramach programów ramowych Unii Europejskiej na szczególną uwagę zasługują prestiżowe granty Europejskiej Rady ds. Badań Naukowych – European Research Council (ERC). Do tej pory ERC przyznała granty naukowcom z UW 33 razy oraz raz badaczowi zagranicznemu, który swój grant będzie realizował na uczelni. Wsparcie przyznawane jest w pięciu kategoriach: ERC Starting Grant, ERC Consolidator Grant, ERC Advanced Grant, ERC Proof of Concept oraz ERC Synergy Grants.

- 2013 – koordynator projektu: Uniwersytet Oxfordzki, Advanced Grant 157 tys. euro, projekt: The Cult of Saints: a christendom-wide study of its origin, spread and development; ze strony UW: dr Robert Wiśniewski (Wydział Historyczny)
W 2015 roku grant ERC otrzymał też dr Piotr Nowak, pracownik Wydziału Matematyki, Informatyki i Mechaniki UW oraz Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Swój projekt realizuje w PAN.
W 2016 roku prof. Grzegorz Pietrzyński z Obserwatorium Astronomicznego UW otrzymał grant ERC na projekt: A sub-percent distance scale from binaries and Cepheids. Grant został przeniesiony do PAN.
